Synopsis

In an apocalyptic future, a group of young adults lead by Cyrus develop a small community to prevent survivors from being poisoned by the smog just outside the boundaries in an uninhabitable world. When the rebellious teenager Ash begins to play outside the boundaries, Cyrus forces her and guardian Noah to reconsider the place they've come to know as home.

The Vision

UNDER is marked by images that convey more than they explicitly state; that lean into the abstract despite being composed from a static reality: cabins, people, earth tones and tree limbs. This is a world caught between fantasy and mere fiction, distanced from clearly defined rules. It is a deceptively simple story, complicated by a history writ large across the screen, that which is reduced to the size of a single line or the visual overlap of one face with another. For these characters, structure is borne upon fear, and boundaries are set in its image, not unlike many modern societies today. UNDER extrapolates this rhetoric through actions and relationships, a governing fate on the plight of its characters; and yet, it remains small, focused on the minute ways we shape our own desires. It tells the story of two young women battling with the space they are provided, and a man (much older in spirit), defining it. Sometimes our worldview can be the size of a pin, and our shared community might not feel much bigger. That history, writ large: an image of a young girl, tearing down a path into the dark beyond, past the end of the earth, and another, poised to follow. What does it mean if she stays? Where does it lead if she goes?
